Board Dum Thoughts

March 17th, 2004 | No Comments | Posted in Older Notes

Tuesdays are my long day at work. The paper goes out on Wednesday. And since our paper is so small I am the one who proofs and processes the pages before ftping them over to the printer.

Last night, we actually got done early, except I had to attend a school board meeting. I was still out until 9:30 at night. School board meetings can be interesting. I really enjoy the special recognitions of students and programs that are succeeding. I think my Pollyanna outlook on life can be a hindrance to real investigative reporting. I am only interested in the good stuff, but I think there is a theory out there that people only want to read about dirty laundry. Maybe that’s true. I just hate reporting on it.

Anyway, school board meetings aren’t too bad but there are a lot of dry parts. I find myself drifting off in my head during some of the presentations.

Someone will be talking about the effect of moving off block scheduling and my brain will go, “She looks like a strawberry cupcake.” Or when there is a presentation about upcoming TEA requirements my brain says, “I wonder if that man is sad.” It is completely involuntary.

It’d be neat if there were a way to record your internal dialog for the day. I’m sure it is mostly crap but I bet there are some nuggets in there. Story ideas. Characters. Plots.
