On Saturday I drove down to Seattle to see my friends perform Sahabra’s Dream at the Mediterranean Fantasy Dance Festival. Sahabra’s Dream is a Zumani Dancers troupe performance about how every woman has a dancer inside of her waiting to break free from the inhibition in her life.
The performance began with veiled woman standing very still in a loose circle. Then a dancing muse stands in the middle of the group and begins to shimming and sway. She drops her veil and begins dancing around the circle.
The women in the circle have surprised looks on their faces. They stand still and watch. Eventually they can’t help but move just a little—their hands begin to dance. The muse continues to seduce the women by dancing around them and looking them in the face.
Finally the women begin to move their bodies. They reach out for the muse. They want to dance and they move in the place they are standing. The dancing becomes more intense and they begin to turn in the circle and hoop and holla. The muse stands back and appreciates her work and the whole piece ends as the woman throw off their veils.
It was a wonderful performance. Here is a slide show of some of the photos.
